Scots Sangs Fur Schools

Traditional and new Scots songs for use in Scottish schools

school nativity play carmondean

The song on this page is The School Nativity Play, written by Gill Bowman with a Fife school, but sung here by Carmondean Folkscene who perform it in their own remarkable way, and have added their own new last verse about what happened in their own school.

The School Nativity Play
We’ll sing you a song… where it all went wrong….
In a school nativity play……

A wise man opened the curtain too soon
The star in the east fell down with a boom
The innkeeper said, ( “There’s plenty of room”)
Oh, it all went wrong on the day

A mouse jumped out of the manger straw
Mary screamed and ran for the door
Dropped Baby Jesus on the floor
In the school nativity play

CHORUS: Oh, the donkey sneezed and its tail fell down
One of the three kings broke his crown
Primary 2 were the talk of the town
At the school nativity play

Joseph’s wee brother was violently sick
He nearly choked on his lolly stick
So I held out Mum’s handbag quick
Oh, it all went wrong on the day

A shepherd made a dash for the loo
The ricketty platform split in two
It was just a stage we were going through
(Did you get it? A stage….we were going through?)
In the school nativity play

Chorus

“Fear not” the teacher cried as the school bell started ringing
It went “Ding dong merrily on high”
And drowned out the carol singing

Chorus

When we were in P. 1,2 and 3,
Our Christmas play folk came to see
But something happened to Ashleigh
She’ll not forget the nativity play

The snowflakes danced around the stage
Lauren tripped; hit Ashleigh’s face
Then a puddle appeared upon the stage
(It wasn’t me, it was you, etc.)
Oh, it all went wrong on the day

The donkey sneezed and Matthew fell down
All of the three kings broke their crowns
The shepherds tripped on their dressing gowns
In the school nativity play (Euan speaks)
In our nativity play.

“Fear not” the teacher cried as the school bell started ringing
It went “Ding dong merrily on high”
And drowned out the carol singing

A spotlight fell and I got the blame
Gabriel’s wings made a pretty blue flame
And we all went home when the firemen came
To the school nativity play
