Traditional and new Scots songs for use in Scottish schools

New Sangs Fae Forfar, Strathmore PS with christine kydd

New 2011 sangs frae Strathmore Primary School, ANGUS, Scotland!

“Move awa Lady Gaga, mak wey fer Strathmore Primary!!” said by one of the children

These songs were written by the pupils with well-known Scots Singer Christine Kydd. She says 'Strathmore Primary welcomed me into the school and over 3 days we wrote songs and then recorded and performed them on the final week. The children of P4/5, the teachers and myself all found it a satisfying and fun project. Teachers said they enjoyed it and learned more about Forfar than they knew before.'

"Working with Christine has enabled our pupils to further develop their skills for life, learning and work.  We have had the opportunity to collaborate, design, apply and create through writing songs linked to our topic work and record a CD and produce a book of our songs.  All our experiences have enabled us to gain greater depth and breadth and work towards achieving our full potential through the four capacities”.
Angela Gourlay, Principal Teacher, Strathmore Primary, ANGUS, June 2011

(Trad)
I sent her for cheese oh aye, oh aye
I sent her for cheese oh aye, oh aye
I sent her for cheese an she fell an skint her knees
Oh the world must be comin tae an end oh aye

I sent her for comics
An she did a forward flip

I sent her for papers
an she got up to some capers

I sent her for breid
an she fell an cut her heid

I sent her for milk
An she saw some fine braw silk

I sent her for butter
An she got intae a clutter

I sent her for water
Until security caught ‘er
Oh the world must be comin tae an end oh aye

Broughty Farfar!
(Tune: 3 Craws)
Broughty is on the River Tay
on the River Tay , on the River Tay,
Broughty Ferry is on the River Tay
Broughty Ferry on your map

In Broughty ferries used to cross the Tay
used to cross the Tay used to cross the Tay
In Broughty ferries used to cross the Tay
In the 19th Century

Broughty Ferry has a bonny wee harbour
a bonny wee harbour a bomnny wee harbour
Broughty Ferry has a bonny wee harbour
majestic swans float about

Broughty has lots of ice cream
lots of ice cream x2
Chocolate, raspberry mango and caramel
And many more flavours

Drumstick lollies, nougat, toffee crisp
Rock and candy floss, gobstoppers on our list
Maltesers, mint choc chip, strawberry, vanilla, mango
I want all the flavours

Vanilla, carrot, cola an lime
Carrot cola lime x2
Cherry, Irn Bru and cream
And a stick o 99

Farfar is a really wee toon
Really wee toon, really wee toon
Farfar is a really wee toon
With a teeny wee museum

Farfar has its ane bonny loch its ane bonny loch
its ane bonny loch
Farfar has its ane bonny loch
With dinghies floating on it

Orange, red, yellow, blue and green
The strong wind fills the empty sails
And the dinghies cross the loch

Brou-ghty or Fo-rfar
I dinnae ken which
Is better than the o-th-er
They are both as good as each other
As long as I get my gobstoppers…..!

When Ah Wis Single
When  ah wis single I used tae comb ma hair
Noo ahm meeried ah huvnae the time tae spare
It’s a life a life a weary weary life
Yer better tae be single than tae be a merried wife

One says Mammy, ‘”Can ye feed me please?”
Th ither says Mammy “an a fiver an some cheese?”
It’s a life a life a weary weary life
Yer better tae be single than tae be a merried wife

When ah wis single ah went oot wi ma mates
Noo ahm meeried ah huv tae bak the cakes
It’s a life…

One says Mammy “Can ah get some sweets?”
The ither says “Mammy, she got aa the treats!”
It’s a life…..

Whe ah wis single ah partied aa the time
but noo ahm merried I’m in ma bed by nine
It’s a life…

One says “Mammy, change ma nappy noo!”
The ither says “Mammy, I think he’s done a poo”
It’s a life…
The neist says “Mammy can ah watch ma TV show?”
The ither says “ Mammy, ah dinna like it though!”
It’s a life….
